Arcane Accessories – chainmail jewellery with a gothic tinge

Mit „Arcane Accessories“ betreten wir eine mysthische Welt mit Gothik-Charakter. Choker, Harnesse oder aufwendig gearbeitete Halsketten – darin sieht Amanda Landman ihre Passion. Die gebürtige Südafrikanerin lebt seit 2014 in Bad Homburg und entwirft dort seit 2017 ihre Schmuckkollektionen aus Stainless Steel.
Amanda verwebt in diesem Verfahren sozusagen kleine Ringe zu Meisterwerken und entwickelt wahre Eyecatcher. Chainmaille nennt man diese Technik und es fühlt sich angenehm glatt und kühl an. Filigran wird Ring für Ring eingearbeitet, bis in langer Prozedur das fertige Werk steht. Kettenhemden wurden in dieser Technik hergestellt; daher übt Amanda eigentlich eine alte Handwerkskunst aus und interpretiert sie neu. Besonders stolz ist sie auf die Werke, bei denen niemand fassen kann, dass diese in Handarbeit hergestellt wurden.

Ihre Schmuckstücke sind Goth und Fetisch inspiriert. Gothik-Kultur ist eine Subkultur, die aus dem Punk und New-Wave hervorgegangen ist. Die Gothic-Szene gilt als ästhetisch orientierte Subkultur, vielleicht ein grund weswegen Amanda so filigran arbeitet.
Historisch betrachtet gibt es die ersten Schmuckstücke wohl seit 100.000 Jahren. Menschen schmückten sich damals mit Muscheln. Es gibt auch Schmuckstücke mit symbolischen Charakter: Der Ring beispielweise ermöglicht tiefe Einblicke in die menschliche Entwicklungs- und Kulturgeschichte. In der Antike dienten Ringe vor allem als Siegel und damit als wichtige Symbole der Macht. In anderen Kulturkreisen, zum Beispiel in Indien, sind Ringe nicht nur Statussymbol und Schmuck, sondern magische Gegenstände, die den Träger vor Unglück schützen und zu Glück und Wohlstand verhelfen sollen. Der meistgetragene Ring ist für viele Erwachsene immer noch der Ehering, wobei er erst später zu einem kirchlichen Symbol wurde und für das Indiz der Liebe steht.
Der englische Schriftsteller J. R. R. Tolkien entwarf die Fantasiewelt Arda, deren bekanntester Kontinent Mittelerde ist. Wer kennt mittlerweile nicht die Saga „Der Herr der Ringe“?! Ringe sind bei Tolkien Symbole der Macht. „Der Eine Ring“ hat die größte Macht und ist zentrales Objekt der Begierde. Aber auch der „Arkenstein“ dürfte auch jenem nicht so eingefleischtem Fan von Bilbo und Frodo mittlerweile bekannnt sein.
Amanda Landman ist das zweite Mal bei der Avantgardista dabei und wir können mit einigen neuen Accessoires rechnen. „Ich denke, dass ich letztes Jahr viel nervöser war als ich es dieses Jahr sein werde,“ so die Designerin. Sie hat sich vorgenommen, noch mehr Vielfalt zu zeigen. Insbesondere die verschiedenen Webtechniken, die Weaves, werden zur Geltung kommen. Headpieces und mehr Accessoires für den Körper werden uns erwarten, und ich bin auf jeden Fall schon gespannt.
Oft passiert das Herstellen in trial-and-error-Modus (Versuch und Irrtum oder lernen aus Fehlern), verrät mir die Südafrikanerin. Sie habe sich das Handwerk selbst beigebracht und viele Tutoriols geschaut. Das Interesse für Schmuckdesign war schon lange da und sie verfiel in Liebe mit Chainmaille, weil es so vielseitig ist. Die Faszination besteht auch darin, aus einem bereits Bestehenden etwas neues zu schaffen. „Meine Werke sind vielseitig und du kannst sie überall kombinieren und tragen, obwohl sie sehr ungewöhnlich sind,“ erklärt mir Amanda. Auf ihrer Website kann man dies auf den Fotos von ihren Kunden sehr gut erkennen. So trägt eine Dame eine Kette lässig auf einer Bootstour, während andere in Latexkleidern mit verschiedenen Schmuckobjekten posieren.

„Arcane Accessories“ wird eine eigene Show haben und auch eine Booth mit Verkauf. Schmuckfans dürften daher schon Vorfreude bekommen und Interessierte direkt bei ihr vorbeischauen. „Es war für mich einfach klar, dass ich wieder bei der Avantgardista dabei sein werde. Chainmaille ist wunderschön – ihr werdet es sehen“, teasert uns Amanda.
In der Gothikszene zuhause und eine Katzenliebhaberin – das ist die junge Designerin. Ihre Eltern wollten immer, dass sie das machen kann, was sie glücklich macht. Sie schwärmt von Island und liebt Thriller und Horrorfilme. Konstruktive Kritik ist immer noch die beste Kritik, sagt sie sich sich. Wobei Amanda auch nach dem Motto von Kurt Cobain lebt „I’d rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.“.
Für mich ist Schmuckdesign Neuland. Daher bin ich sehr gespannt auf „Arcane Accessories“.

With „Arcane Accessories“, we enter a mystical world with gothic character. Chokers, harnesses or elaborately crafted necklaces – this is where Amanda Landmann sees her passion. Born in South Africa, Amanda Landman has lived in Bad Homburg since 2014 and has been designing her stainless steel jewellery collections there since 2017.
In this process, Amanda weaves small rings into masterpieces and develops real eye-catchers. This technique is called chainmail and it feels pleasantly smooth and cool. With filigree, ring for ring is worked in until the finished work is ready after a long procedure. Chainmail shirts were made using this technique, so Amanda practices an old craft and reinterprets it. She is particularly proud of the works that nobody can believe that they were made by hand.
Her jewellery is inspired by goth and fetish. Gothic culture is a subculture that emerged from Punk and New Wave. The Gothic scene is considered an aesthetically oriented subculture, perhaps which is why Amanda works so filigree.

Historically, the first pieces of jewellery have probably existed for 100,000 years. People used to adorn themselves with shells. There are also pieces of jewellery with a symbolic character: The ring, for example, provides deep insights into the history of human development and culture. The most worn ring is still the wedding ring for many adults, whereby it only later became a church symbol and stands for the indication of love.
The English author J. R. R. Tolkien designed the fantasy world Arda, which most famous continent is Middle Earth. Who hasn’t heard the saga „The Lord of the Rings“ before? Rings are symbols of power in Tolkin. „The One Ring“ has the ultimate power and is the central object of desire. But also the „Arkenstein“ should be known by now to the not so die-hard fans of Bilbo and Frodo.
Amanda Landman is for the second time at the Avantgardista and we can expect some new accessories. „I think I was much more nervous last year than I will be this year,“ says the designer. She has set herself the goal of showing even more variety. Especially the different weaving techniques, the weaves, will come into focus. Headpieces and more accessories for the body will await us. In any case, I am already curious.
The South African woman tells me that manufacturing often happens by trial and error. She taught herself the craft and watched many tutorials. The interest in jewellery design had been there for a long time and she fell in love with Chainmaille because it is so versatile. The fascination also lies in creating something new out of something that already exists. „My works are versatile and you can combine and wear them anywhere, although they are very unusual,“ explains Amanda. On her website you can see this very well on the photos of her customers. One lady is wearing a chain casually on a boat tour, while others are posing in latex dresses with different jewellery objects.
Arcane Accessories will have its own show and also a booth for sales. Jewellery fans should therefore already be looking forward to it and interested people should come to see it. „It was simply clear to me that I would be at the Avantgardista again. Chainmaille is beautiful – you’ll see it,“ teasers Amanda.
At home in the gothic scene and a cat lover – that’s the young designer. Her parents always wanted her to be able to do what makes her happy. She raves about Iceland and loves thrillers and horror movies. Constructive criticism is still the best criticism, she says to herself. Amanda also lives by the Motto of Kurt Cobain „I’d rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.“.
For me, jewellery design is new territory. That’s why I’m very excited about „Arcane Accessories“.
