London calling: "Engineers of Desire" and "Chained&Stoned"

London, Punk, Ungezämtheit – seit ihr schon getriggert? Krallt euch in die Sitze, macht euch auf was gefasst. Auch wer auf der AVANTGARDISTA dann vielleicht schon etwas erschlagen ist von den vielen Eindrücken der vorherigen Shows, düfte hellwach sein, wenn die wilde Crew von „Engineers of desire“ den Catwalk zum Brodeln bringt. Heartbeat on, wispere ich nur gebannt. Cas, die die Lücke zwischen Retro-Futurismus und alternativer Post-Apokalyptik schließt, entwirft seit über einem Jahrzehnt alternative Kleidung für die Post-Punk Mad-Max-Generation.
Und für die Hasenherzen unter euch: Das ist noch nicht alles! „Chained&Stoned“ aus England schmückt seine Landsleute mit unglaublichen Schmuckdesign aus. Zudem wird die ganze Show ein richtiges Theater sein, wie Insider dieser Designer es schon ahnen. Show must go on – was denken sie sich diesmal aus?! 2010 wurde mit „Circus of Sins“ eine kleine Horror-Show insziniert, auf dem „Festa del Fuoco“ gab es sogar Feuereinlagen.
Heute telefoniere ich mit Cassie Carpenter aka Cas, der Designern von „Engineers of Desire“ im feinsten „London English“:

Du bist nicht das erste Mal in München, aber das erste Mal auf der AVANTGARDISTA mit einer Show. Worauf freust du dich?
Cas: „Ich bin glücklich, wieder in München zu sein. Besonders freue ich mich auf die Präsentation mit Chained&Stoned, mit denen wir seit einiger Zeit zusammenarbeiten. Schmuck aus Chainmaille und Scalemaille ist ihr Steckenpferd und passt einfach wunderbar mit unseren Designs zusammen. Der moderne Krieger, den konzepieren wir neu in unserer Kollaboration. Chained&Stoned macht unglaubliche Werke aus Metall. Komplette Gewänder aus Scalemaille, also wie eine Art Schuppenpanzer, werdet ihr erleben.
Ich bin so gespannt, wie unsere Show ankommen wird. Natürlich haben wir uns etwas spektakuläres mit unserer eigenen Handschrift ausgedacht. Im letzten Jahr war ich ohne Show dabei und ich hab so viele tolle Designer gesehen. Dieses Jahr wird das Angebot noch vielfältiger – darauf bin ich echt gespannt.
Von dem Event habe ich von befreundeten Designern gehört: „Cas, du musst unbedingt nach München – die Leute werden Augen machen.“ Das Level auf der AVANTGARDISTA ist ein anderes als auf einem Festival, auf der eine Show nebenher läuft. Das Publikum kommt zur Location und zum Laufsteg, weil es an Fashion interessiert ist. Alles ist eben viel exklusiver und internationaler.“
Dein Design ist echt abgefahren. Mad Max is calling und extrem wild. Woher nimmst du deine Ideen?
„Das ist eine gute Frage. Ich kann das gar nicht beantworten mit einer Sache, weil ich von so vielen Dingen inspiriert werde. Upcycling und Recycling sind Elemente, die ich immer neu erfinde. Und dann entstehen Dinge einfach beim Machen. Die Idee kommt immer währenddessen.
Mein Design ist ein Mix aus Vintage und Carnival Grotesque bis hin zu Fetish Chic. Ich tobe mich dort einfach aus und habe ein Designteam, welches im gleichen Takt wippt. Wir entwerfen Miederwaren und Accessoires in verschiedenen Techniken der Metallverabeitung. Auch extreme Headpieces oder Elemente mit Gasmasken haben wir im Programm.“
Wie bist du eigentlich Designerin geworden?
„Ich komme tatsächlich aus der Metallverarbeitung und habe dort meinen Fokus. Viel habe ich mir natürlich auch selber beigebracht. Besonders den Teil, wie man unterschiedliches Material zusammen bringt. Leder und Kunstleder verarbeite ich auch gern und hin und wieder PVC. Latex findest du jedoch nicht bei uns. In der Schule fand ich die AGs immer toll und habe sicherlich auch dort schon eine Anlage fürs Handarbeiten gebildet. Der Grundstein der „Engineers of Desire“ ist also vor etwa 20 Jahren gesetzt worden.“

Das Masterpiece, das Meisterwerk… Zwischen allen fantastischen Designs, welches ist deines?
„Meine Meisterwerke sind die Schnitte meiner Korsetts, weil die Silhouette von ihnen immer meine persönliche Handschrift trägt. Hier verwende ich gerne unterschiedliche Materialien, gehe ins Detail und arbeite in unterschiedlichen Stilen. Mir ist es wichtig, dass es gut aussieht – aber auch bequem ist. Und das ist eher die Herausforderung. Der viktorianische Kleidungsstil ist eben wirklich anders, man wird eingeschnürt, man arbeitet mit Miedern. Trotzdem soll man aber auch einige Stunden darin verbringen können und sich gut fühlen.“
Du hast schon ungewöhnliche Ideen, Cas. Was ist an deinen Werken noch besonders?
„Alles ist handgemacht und sehr exklusiv. Dadurch ist jedes Teil auch einzigartig. Selbstverständlich fertigen wir insbesondere die Mieder auf Maß an. Unsere Produktionen sind nie auf Masse und ich bin mir sicher, dass jeder das Herzblut spürt, welches in jedem Produkt steckt. Hin und wieder fertige ich auch für Bands und andere Künstler Outfits an. Burlesque Tänzerin, Fetisch-Fans – da ist alles dabei.“
Wie muss ich mir einen Morgen bei dir in London vorstellen?
„Ich starte, wie so viele Menschen, in den Tag mit einem Kaffee vor meinem Laptop und checke Mails und Social Media. Zudem habe ich das Glück, dass ich da lebe, wo ich auch arbeite. Mein Atelier ist zuhause und ich höre gern Musik, wenn ich arbeite. Es gehören auch noch weitere Kreative meinem Team an, die ich schon seit vielen Jahren kenne. Gelegentlich sind die dann auch dort.
Jedoch reise ich sehr viel um die Welt. Nächstes Wochenende bin ich in Amsterdam. Auch waren wir schon mal in Australien. USA habe ich noch auf der Liste.“
Cas, gehst du auch mit deinen Kreationen zum Einkaufen um die Ecke?
„Nicht in voller Montur, jedoch schon mit einzelnen Teilen. Die Leute auf der Straße sprechen mich dann oft an: „Wow, das sieht fantastisch aus. Wo gibt es das?“ Ich liebe es stylisch und nicht langweilig zu sein. Und hey, wir leben in London – da sind die Menschen sowieso oft extremer und mutiger.“

London calling: „Engineers of Desire“ and „Chained&Stoned“

London, Punk, insubordination – are you triggered yet? Claw your fingers into the seats, be prepared for something. Even if you’re a bit slain from the many impressions of the previous shows at the AVANTGARDISTA, you’ll be wide awake when the wild crew of „Engineers of desire“ hunts the catwalk. Heartbeat on, I just whisper spellbound. Cas, who closes the gap between retro-futurism and alternative post-apocalypticism, has been designing alternative clothing for the post-punk Mad-Max-generation for over a decade.
And for the rabbit-hearted among you: That’s not all! „Chained&Stoned“ from England adorns his fellows with incredible jewellery design. Moreover, the whole show will be a real theater, as insiders of these designers already suspect. Show must go on – what are they putting up this time? In 2010 a little horror show was staged with „Circus of sins“ or at the „Festa del Fuoco“ there were even fire interludes.

Today I’m on the phone with Cassie Carpenter aka Cas, the designers of „Engineers of Desire“, using my finest London English:
It’s not your first time in Munich, but it’s your first time at the AVANTGARDISTA with a show. What are you looking forward to?
Cas: „I’m  very happy to be in Munich again. I’m especially looking forward to the presentation with Chained&Stoned, with whom we’ve been working together for some time. Jewellery made of Chainmaille and Scalemaille is her passion and fits perfectly with our designs.
The modern warrior, that’s what we’re redesigning in our colloboration. Chained&Stoned makes incredible works of metal. You will experience complete robes made of scale-enamel, like a kind of scale armour.
I am so curious how our show will go down. Of course we thought up something spectacular with our own handwriting. Last year I was there without a show and I saw so many great designers. This year the offer will be even more varied – I’m really looking forward to it.
I’ve heard about the event from fellow designers: „Cas, you absolutely have to go to Munich – people will turn a blind eye“. The level at the AVANTGARDISTA is different than at a festival where a show runs alongside. The audience at the AVANTGARDISTA is there because they’re interested in fashion. Everything is much more exclusive and international.“
Your design is really cool. Mad Max is calling in an extremely wild fashion. Where do you get your ideas from?
„That’s a good question. I can’t answer that with one thing because I’m inspired by so many things. Upcycling and recycling are elements that I always reinvent. And then things just happen when you do them. The idea always comes along.
My design is a mix of vintage and carnival grotesque up to fetish chic. I simply put my heart out and have a design team that swings to the same beat as well. We design corsetry and accessories in different techniques of metal processing. We also have extreme headpieces or elements with gas masks in our program.“
How did you become a designer?
„I actually come from metalworking and have my focus there. Of course, I also taught myself a lot. Especially the part about how to bring different materials together. I also like to process leather and imitation leather and now and then PVC. You won’t find latex with us though. At school I always liked the after school activities and I’m sure I’ve already built a handicraft affinity there. The foundation of „Engineers of Desire“ was laid about 20 years ago.“

The master piece, the master piece… Among all the fantastic designs, which one is yours?
„My master pieces are always the cuts of my corsets, because the silhouette of them always carries my personal handwriting. Here I like to use different materials, go into detail and work in different styles. It is important to me that it looks good – but is also comfortable. And that’s more of a challenge. The Victorian clothing style is really different, you are constricted, you work with bodices. Nevertheless, you should also be able to spend a few hours in it and feel good.“
You already have unusual ideas, Cas. What is special about your works?
„Everything is handmade and very exclusive. Thus each part is also unique. Of course, we especially manufacture the corsets to measure. Our productions are never on mass and I am sure that everyone feels the heart blood which is in every product. Every now and then I also make outfits for bands and other artists, bourlesque dancers, fetish fans – everything is there.“
How do I imagine your morning in London?
„Like so many people, I start the day with a coffee in front of my laptop and check mails and social media. I’m also lucky that I live where I work. My atelier is at home and I like listening to music when I work. There are also other creative people in my team that I have known for many years. Occasionally they are there as well.
But I travel a lot around the world. Next weekend I will be in Amsterdam. We have also been to Australia before. USA is something I still have on the list.“
Cas, do you also go shopping around the corner with your creations?
„Not in full kit, but equipped with some parts for sure. The people on the street often address me: „Wow, that looks fantastic. Where can I find it? I love to be stylish and not boring. And hey, we live in London – people are often more extreme and braver there anyway.“
