"Rubbella" – Latexdesign that feels like a cocoon

„Rubbella“ steht für farbenfrohes Latexdesign und wird im hohem Norden der Niederlande entworfen und produziert. Wendy, die sich selbst auch Rubbella nennt, ist DIE Frau, wenn es um passgenaue Schnitte geht. Sie designt mit Herzblut in ihrem Atelier in einem kleinen Dorf in Friesland, erzählt sie mir mit ihrer positiv erfrischenden Art.
Morgens, halb zehn in Feanwâlden: Die Leeuwarderin steigt auf ihr silberfarbenes Hollandrad und braust in ihre Werkstatt um die Ecke. Mit Blumen geschmückt ist das Fahrrad leider nicht, so wird mein Bild von der klassischen Niederländerin kurzfristig getrübt. Rubella erzählt mir aber dann, dass sie in ihrer Studentenzeit ein solches Fahrrad hatte, welches mittlerweile mit platten Reifen in der Garage steht.
Du warst schon letztes Jahr auf der Avantgardista dabei. Was bewegt dich zur erneuten Teilnahme, hast du neue Ziele?

Rubbella: „Die Avantgardista 2017 war meine erste Fashionshow überhaupt. Das war so toll, dass ich auf jeden Fall wieder dabei sein wollte.
Natürlich will ich noch besser sein dieses Jahr und eine noch bessere Organisation meinerseits habe ich mir ans Herz gelegt. Im letzten Jahr hatte ich eine gemeinsame Show mit einem Designer, was daher leider etwas konfus war im Ablauf. Aus diesem Grunde hat „Rubbella“ eine eigene Show in diesem Jahr. Rückblickend auf die Avantgardista 2017 war die Generalprobe sehr gut – aber die Show an sich war turbulent. Unsere Choreographie auf dem Catwalk hatte zu viel Tempo und die Musik lief noch immer, als wir bereits fertig waren mit unserem Durchlauf. Wir haben dann einfach getanzt und es sah aus, als ob dies zur Show gehörte – die Energie war einfach immer noch zu spüren. Im Nachhinein eine lustige Geschichte, an die ich mich immer erinnern werde.
In meinem Showroom auf der Avantgardista können auch die aktuellen Design gekauft werden, oder gern nehme ich auch Mass und fertige an.“
Wie bist du Designerin geworden?
„Schon als Jugendliche fand ich alles was mit handwerklichen Tätigkeiten zu tun hatte, interessant. Zu meiner eigentlichen Profession bin ich vielmehr über meine Jugendliebe gekommen. Seine Eltern hatten eine Näherei für körperbehinderte Menschen, weshalb ich selber angefangen habe zu nähen. Auf Latex bin ich dann durch meinen jetzigen Mann Jan gestoßen und war sofort von dem Material fasziniert. Ich habe dann ganz simpel losgelegt, hier geschnitten und dort geklebt, nur Freunde und mich selbst.
Im Prinzip habe ich mir alles selber beigebracht. Nur habe ich über eine Fernschule einen Onlinekurs gemacht, wie man Schnittmuster erstellt und verarbeitet. Ohne autodidaktisches Talent geht sowas natürlich nicht. Im Jahr 2009 habe ich dann eine kleine Kollektion zusammengestellt, worauf dann viele weitere Aufträge einströmten. „Rubbella“ war geboren.“
Was ist das Besondere an „Rubbella“?
„Der größte Fan muss schon man selbst sein, wenn man etwas mit Leidenschaft schaffen will. Ich selber finde Latex deshalb unglaublich und dies merkt man sicher auch an meinen Designs. Wenn man Latex trägt, kann man trotzdem alles auf der Haut spüren. Die Sonne, aber auch die Kälte wird intensiver und man fühlt jede Berührung. Es ist wie ein eigener Kokon. Das gefällt mir.
Alles wird von mir hergestellt, sorgfältig verarbeitet und auf Kundenwünsche gehe ich ein. Bei meinem Design steht immer die Person im Vordergrund. Wenn dieses Outfit nicht du selbst bist, wirst du nicht glücklich aussehen darin und dich nicht wohlfühlen, um es vereinfacht zu sagen. Mein Design steht deshalb für Passform und Individualität.
Mir geht es auch darum, immer wieder einen neuen Schnitt zu entwerfen. Immer der gleiche Schnitt, vielleicht mit neuen Farben – das macht mir keinen Spaß.“
Worauf bist du neben der Fashionshow noch gespannt?
„Natürlich auf die Aftershowparty „Space Intruders“. Die Party „Geheimer Garten“ war einfach toll und ich muss gestehen, dass München sich mittlerweile wie mein zweites Zuhause anfühlt. Deshalb freue ich mich auch, dass ich meine Freunde in München alle treffen werde.“
Jedes Jahr landen die niederländischen Kinder weltweit auf der „most happiest kids“-Liste. Wie war deine Kindheit?
„Ich habe meine Schulzeit sehr genossen, weil man an den niederländischen Schulen einen großen Fokus auf Kunst legt. Auch habe ich als Kind wirklich alles mögliche gesammelt und gehortet und daraus Neues gemacht. Wir hatten keinen Computer oder sowas, wir haben viel draußen gespielt auch auch miteinander. Kindheit war einfach ganz anders als heute. Mit meinem Bruder habe ich damals beispielsweise  tolle Baumhütten gebaut.“
Abschalten und entspannen – wo gelingt dir das am Besten?
„Ich surfe gern und liebe den Strand. Am liebsten bin ich an der südlichen französischen Atlantikküste. Und natürlich in München, wo viele meiner Freunde leben, relaxe ich mit Leidenschaft. Die Atmosphäre in den Biergärten ist einmalig. „Stand Up Paddling“ gehört auch zu meinen Hobbies.“
Das Leben auf dem Land in Kombination mit deinem Label, wie fühlt sich das an?
„Viele wissen nicht, was da genau in meinen Räumen vor sich geht. Ich wohne halt wirklich auf dem Dorf und obwohl die Niederländer für ihren liberalen Lebensstil bekannt sind, ist das nicht überall so. In kleineren Dörfern ist man trotzdem eher konservativ. Hier ist nicht Amsterdam – hier ist Friesland!
Trotzdem bin ich dann doch wohl sehr bekannt, weshalb mein weitester Kundenauftrag aus Japan! Ich habe auch ein Latexhemd mit einem Eisbär entworfen für einen Kunden in Grönland. Das war schon ein tolles Kompliment.
Wer dann mal eine Bestellung aufgibt, wundert sich vielleicht, weshalb die Lieferung in einem etwas abgefriffenem Amazon Paket eintrifft. Rubbella ist umweltbewusst und versucht mit solchen Aktionen, den Recycling Gedanken umzusetzen.“
Ich jedenfalls bin schon ganz gespannt wie meine in Auftrag gegebene „Panda Mask“ ankommen wird.

„Rubbella“ – Latexdesign that feels like a cocoon

„Rubbella“ stands for colourful latex designs and is created and produced in the far north of the Netherlands. Wendy, who also calls herself Rubbella, is THE woman when it comes to perfectly fitting cuts. She designs with heart and soul in her studio in a small village in Friesland, she tells me in her positively refreshing way.
In the morning at half past nine in Feanwâlden, the woman from Leeuwarder climbs on her silver-coloured Dutch bike and roars into her workshop just around the corner. Unfortunately, the bike is not decorated with flowers, hence my image of the classic Dutch woman is temporarily clouded. Rubella tells me, that during her student days, she had such a bicycle, which is now in the garage with flat tires.
You were at the Avantgardista last year. What took you to re-participate, do you have new goals?
Rubbella: „The Avantgardista 2017 was my first fashion show ever. That was so great that I definitely wanted to be back.
Of course I want to be even better this year and the better organization on my part is what I have recommended to myself. Last year I had a show together with another designer, and that was unfortunately a bit confusing. That’s why „Rubbella“ has its own show this year. Looking back on the Avantgardista 2017, the final dress rehearsal was very good – but the show itself was turbulent. Our choreography on the catwalk had too much tempo and the music was still playing when we were already finished with the run. We just danced and it looked like this was part of the show – the energy was still there. In retrospect, a funny story I will always remember.
In my showroom at the Avantgardista you can also buy the current designs. I’d be happy to take the measurements and make them individually as well though.“

How did you become a designer?
„Even as a teenager I found everything that had to do with manual activities interesting. I came to my actual profession through my childhood sweetheart. His parents had a sewing workshop for physically handicapped people, which is why I started sewing myself. Then I came across latex introduced by my husband Jan and was immediately fascinated by the material. I started very simply, cut here and glued there only for some friends and myself.
In principle, I taught myself everything. But I took an online course through a correspondence school on how to create and process patterns. Of course, you can’t do this without autodidactic talent. In 2009 I put together a small collection, which was followed by many more orders. „Rubbella“ was born.“
What is special about „Rubbella“?
„The biggest fan has to be yourself if you want to create something with passion. I find latex unbelievable and this can be seen in my designs. When you wear latex, you can still feel everything on your skin. The sun, but also the cold feels more intense and you realise every touch. It’s like a cocoon of its own. I like that.
Everything is manufactured by me, carefully processed and I respond to customer requests. With my designs, the person is always in the foreground. If this outfit isn’t you, you won’t look happy in it and you won’t feel comfortable, to say the least. My design therefore stands for fit and individuality.
It is also important to me to create a new cut over and over again. Always the same cut, maybe with new colors – I don’t like it that way.“
What are you curious about besides the fashion show?
„The aftershow party „Space Intruders“, of course. The party „Secret Garden“ was simply great and I have to admit that Munich feels like my second home by now. That’s why I’m so happy to meet all my friends in Munich.“
Every year, Dutch children are top-ranked on the „most happiest kids“ list worldwide. How was your childhood?
„I enjoyed my school days very much because the Dutch school has a big focus on art. Also as a child I collected and hoarded everything and made something new out of it. We didn’t have a computer or something, we played a lot outside, too. Childhood was simply very different from today. For example, with my brother, I built different tree houses once.“
Relax and unwind – where do you do it best?
„I love surfing and the beach. I prefer the southern French Atlantic coast. And of course in Munich, where many of my friends live, I do relax with passion. The atmosphere in the beer gardens is unique. „Stand Up Paddling“ is also one of my hobbies.“
Living at the countryside in combination with your label, how does it work out?
„Many people don’t know what exactly is going on in my workshop. I really do live in a village and although the Dutch are known for their liberal lifestyle, this is not the case everywhere. In smaller villages, however, people are rather conservative. This is not Amsterdam – this is Friesland!
Nevertheless, I am well known, which is why my farthest customer order came from Japan! I also designed a latex shirt with a polar bear for a customer in Greenland. That was a great compliment.
If you then place an order, you might wonder why the delivery arrives in a somewhat worn out Amazon package. Rubbella is environmentally conscious and tries to implement the recycling idea with such actions.“
I am very curious how my commissioned „Panda Mask“ will arrive.
